OUR STORY

From a young age, I held a deep dream in my heart: to study in the United States, to experience a broader world, and to learn alongside students and professors from around the globe. However, at the time, I didn’t know the exact path to gaining admission to prestigious universities in the U.S. I faced numerous challenges, navigating the process of gathering study abroad information and preparing the necessary application materials entirely on my own. After much trial and error, I was fortunate enough to secure the opportunity to study in the U.S., completing my undergraduate studies in Chicago and later fulfilling my dream of earning a master’s degree at Columbia University in New York. The memory of my parents embracing me with joy, as I stood in my cap and gown on graduation day, is something I will cherish forever.

Over time, friends and acquaintances with an interest in studying at U.S. universities began to approach me for advice.
“How can I get into an Ivy League school?” they would ask.
As I reviewed their college admission essays, I often thought,
“If they just revise this section, their essay would shine so much more.”
“If they add this specific detail, it could significantly boost their chances of acceptance.”
Seeing them take steps closer to their dreams with my guidance gave me a deep sense of fulfillment.

학창시절 마음 깊은 곳에 소중한 꿈이 싹트고 있었습니다. 전세계에서 모인 학생, 교수들과 함께 미국에서 공부하고 더 넓은 세상을 경험하고 싶다는 꿈이었습니다. 하지만 당시 저는 어떻게 해야 미국 명문대에 입학할 수 있는지 구체적으로 알지 못했습니다. 유학정보와 입학에 필요한 사항 등을 전부 혼자 준비하면서 많은 시행착오와 어려움을 겪었습니다. 다행히 각고의 노력 끝에 미국 유학의 기회를 얻을 수 있었고, 시카고에서 학부과정을 마친 뒤에 꿈에 그리던 뉴욕의 Columbia University 대학원의 석사과정에 진학할 수 있었습니다. 컬럼비아를 졸업하던 날, 활짝 웃으며 학사모 쓴 저를 안아 주시던 부모님의 모습을 아직도 잊을 수가 없습니다.

주변에서 미국 대학 진학에 관심 있는 지인들이 종종 찾아와 상담을 요청했습니다.
“어떻게 하면 아이비리그 대학에 들어갈 수 있어?” 
그 때마다 저는 그들의 컬리지 어드미션 에세이를 리뷰하며
‘아, 이 에세이는 이렇게만 고치면 훨씬 더 빛을 발할텐데.’
‘이 지원서에는 이런 내용을 추가하면 합격 가능성을 높일 수 있겠는데.’ 하는 인사이트가 떠올랐습니다. 제 조언에 힘을 얻어 꿈에 한 발짝 다가서는 이들을 바라보며 큰 보람을 느꼈습니다.
